Robert Brown was born in Soham on 27th September 1889 (Newmarket Q4-1889 3B:528), baptised in Soham on 3rd January 1890, son of William James and Elizabeth BROWN (née BARTLE) of Pratt Street, Soham.

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at Hall Street, Soham with his father William James BROWN [25] brewer's clerk; his mother Elizabeth [27] born Brandon, Norfolk; brother Charles William [3] and sister Harriett [3 months]. All except his mother were born in Soham.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at 8 Granby Terrace, Soham with his parents (mother's birth place now recorded as Barnham, Suffolk); brothers Charles W and Walter E [8]; sisters Harriett and Ethel E [1]. The new siblings were born in Soham.

1911 census...Aged 22, a single man, navvy, he was lodging at 65 The Grove, Southchurch, Southend on Sea with William and Elizabeth MOSS. His parents were at Hall Street (Granby Terrace), Soham with his brother Benjamin George [9] and sisters Ethel Emma and Kate Elizabeth [5]. His mother is recorded as born at Barnham, Suffolk. 3 of her 9 children had died.

His younger brother Walter was killed in action at Le Cateau in France in 1914 see here




He enlisted in Bedford. The medal roll gives his death as Killed Accdt.
The whereabouts of his unit at the time has not been found and unless his Army records are found, the circumstances of his death will not be known.
